Videana: A Software Tool for Scientific Film Analysis

In this talk, we present computer-based approaches for video content analysis to support scientific film studies. In the context of the research project “Methods and tools for media scientific analysis”, part of the research center “Media Upheavals” at the University of Siegen, funded by the German Research Foundation (SFB/FK 615, Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft), we have developed the software “Videana”. This software is aimed at relieving media scientists from very time-consuming tasks of manually annotating videos and films. The following video analysis algorithms are presented: shot boundary detection, camera motion estimation, text detection and face detection. In addition, the graphical user interface of “Videana” is explained which allows a user to refine and correct automatic analysis results as well as inserting keywords for certain objects and events. Finally, the detection quality of the automatic analysis approaches is discussed.
